William M.
Stanton (Pop) helped friends sell Christmas Trees on their retail
lot in Greensboro back in the 1960's. In the early 70's, his son Bill
also started working at the Greensboro lot. The two Stantons
enjoyed the work so much that they planted their first acre of trees
at their Garner farm in 1974. It took 8 years of pruning,
mowing, spraying and fertilizing before their first crop was ready to
sell.
During that time, Pop worked as an Extension Forestry Specialist
through NCSU and Bill worked as a forester and land agent for Carolina
Power & Light Co. They spent their weekends, vacations and
holidays at the Garner farm taking care of that first crop. In
1978, Bill expanded the operation by planting his first Fraser firs at
his farm in Sparta, NC.
These days, Pop, retired and in his eighties, still works hard at the
Garner farm on a daily basis and Bill, in his forties, spends his work
week in both Garner and Sparta taking care of the tree farms.
Bill's son, Cameron, is now taking on duties at Pop-N-Son helping out
his father and grandfather. Right beside these 3 men, there's
Bill's wife, Nancy, keeping the books, answering the phone and making
wreaths and bows... in addition to taking care of the family.
Growing a beautiful, healthy tree is important to the Stantons.
In 1986 and 1996, Pop-n-Son Christmas Tree farm was "Grand Champion
Winner" at the NC Christmas Tree Growers Annual Tree Contests.
The Stantons are active members of the
National Christmas Tree Association, the NC
Christmas Tree Association, the Alleghany
Christmas Tree Association, and the
Eastern NC Christmas Tree Growers Association.
